A boilermaker is a tradesperson who must be highly skilled and knowledgeable in the wide range of tasks required to fabricate, construct, install, demolish, repair and maintain a wide range of vessels, tanks, towers, boilers, hoists and other structures, ancillary equipment and fixtures made of steel, other metals, fiberglass, and other materials.
A boilermaker has a wide variety of tasks which can include construction and maintenance activities involved in the field and in industrial and commercial plants such as:
Ship building and repair docks, iron and steel production facilities, fertilizer plants, water treatment facilities, breweries, steam generation plants, sawmills, pulp and paper mills, wind and fusion sites, gas turbines, electric power generation, , refineries (oil, chemical) and numerous other industrial and commercial facilities.
An amount of overlap exists between the tasks performed by a boilermaker and other trades people. Steel fabricators, iron workers welders and pipe fitters are a close match to a boilermaker and can perform similar tasks.

Boilermakers Tasks may include:
- Knowledge of hand tools and their applications
- Ability to use striking tools such as hammers and mallets
- Knowledge of measuring and marking tools

- Mixing quantities
- Testing applications
