A blacksmith is a trained and knowledgeable trade’s person with the ability to shape and bend metal by heating it to temperatures allowing it to be shaped and maneuvered. Blacksmiths create metal items or repair broken items using various hand tools.
 
Blacksmiths must have excellent hand eye coordination and be able to follow plans to create metal objects or forge metal object together applying flux and hammering.
 
The entry requirement for a blacksmith is an AQF Certificate III or higher qualification.

 

Blacksmiths tasks may include:

 
  • Selects specific metal types and heats it for manipulation
  • May forge cold metals
  • Hammers heated metal to size and shapes with specialised hand tools
  • Studies hand drawings and plans to meet job requirements
  • Verifies dimensions of forged metals visually and using measuring equipment
  • Shapes bars rods and blocks of metal
  • Creates or repairs various metal objects using hand tools
